Demographic characteristics of psychiatric inpatients in Korea



Abstract
The autors conducted a survey of mental health policy, with the aim of contributing to community mental health practice in Korea. In this survey, we analyzed the demographic characteristics of psychiatric inpatients in Korea according to each
institution.
A total of 1,126 inpatients were interviewed according to demographic variables designed by task force group of this survey.
@ES The results were as followed:
@EN 1) The age distributions showed statistically difference among the studied institutions. The age distributions in small psychiatric inpatient(below 30 beds) were younger than those of mental hospitals and asylums, for example.
2) As for the type of caretakers, asylums and mental hospital inpatient units showed a shift phenomenon from parent and spouse to brother and sister.
3) As for the achievement of education, in is needed the higher proportion of voluntary admission type in the future mental health policy.
From the above results, the author propose that individualized mental health programs are needed according to psychiatric facilities and present status.
